X, formerly known as Twitter, has unveiled a new plan that would charge new and unverified users a $1 annual subscription fee to enrol up.

This was said in a message posted today, October 18, on the popular social networking platform’s help account.

The programme is currently being tested in New Zealand and the Philippines, according to X. New accounts will be able to post and engage with other users throughout the test.

Elon Musk stated earlier, “Starting today, we’re testing a new programme (Not A Bot) in New Zealand and the Philippines,” the announcement said.

“To post and interact with other posts, new, unverified accounts will be required to sign up for a $1 annual subscription.

“In order to post and engage with other postings, newly verified accounts must purchase a $1 yearly membership. There is no impact on current users during this test.

“This new test was created to support our already effective efforts to balance platform accessibility with the tiny fee amount and eliminate spam, platform manipulation, and bot activity. It doesn’t lead to profit.

“And the only effective, large-scale solution to date has been subscription options.”

The chairman of X, Elon Musk, revealed the rationale behind the yearly membership charge in a tweet on Wednesday.

Musk claims that the fee will lessen automated bot accounts and spam.

“Correct, read for free, but write for $1 per year.” It is the only approach to combat bots without barring legitimate users.

“This won’t stop bots completely, but it will be 1000X harder to manipulate the platform.”
